Bibliography Plot Summary A woodcutter and a priest are sitting under the large Rashomon gate, sheltered from pouring rain. The woodcutter, wondering if the commoner might be able to help them understand what has happened, begins to recount how three days earlier he had found the body of a murdered samurai while working in the forest. He fled the place and reported his finding to the authorities. Three days later, he was summoned to testify in court. Also the priest was at the court, describing how he had briefly seen the samurai and his wife travelling together earlier. Next, the court is presented with a policeman and a notorious bandit by the name of Tajomaru.

The Hashimoto story almost ended before it began. He enlisted in the Japanese army in but caught tuberculosis and spent four years in a veterans hospital.

It was while hospitalized that a chance meeting with another Japanese veteran opened his eyes to a new world. He was given a magazine on Japanese cinema that included a sample screenplay.
